God continues to bless me with a gift to capture and create.

I'm discovering lately a calling to share the art in the ordinary... to find the good in life's magical and not-so-magical moments... but plenty of photographers could say this, right? So how about while we're caputuring that art in your life, TONS O FUN is had in the process? We'll probably become BFF, too. :) Sold?

I love to travel and hereby announce that I will photograph your international wedding for free! Until then, the majority of my wandering and shooting will be spent in the South, where I proudly call Tennessee “home,” and sweet home Alabama my second.

Here you can follow my recent work, adventures and all the latest goings-on, most likely on a slight time delay until I overcome my fear of blogging (mostly the writing).

I hope you enjoy what you see, because I enjoy what I do.
I sincerely can’t wait to meet you!

-Shea, but you can call me boom. :)

Kinsley | clarksville family photography

Maybe I should start arriving at all my lifestyle sessions before they’re ready… it was just too much fun to document the process of preparing a baby for photos. :) When I walked in the door, this is exactly what Kinsley was wearing and doing… and I just loved it.

Then a little snack…

And of course to follow: a quick bath. Kinsley LOVES baths.

Her first experience with snow. This was the best we got. She wasn’t very impressed. :)

And after the quick shots around downtown, one more to show off their precious new home. I love you!

I can never post them all… I would need a full time blogger on hand. :) So be sure and watch her little slideshow here and always my most recent work here.

birth announcements

I frequently get asked about birth announcements and thought I’d highlight a few of my favorites. My friend Stacey at rocpaper creates gorgeous custom invitations for weddings, parties, pretty much everything and anything…along with adorable Christmas cards. My favorite of hers so far has been the birth announcements. {Watch out for some familiar baby faces! Stacey features my photos on her samples!} Each one is so unique from the other, yet they all have such a classic and fresh look. Be sure and look up rocpaper for any of your paper needs… also featured on MINTED…another great resource. Other suggested sites? tinyprints and inababycarriage! Get ready for a nice long distraction. :)

Have any other suggestions to share? Leave a comment below… I’d love to hear!

Ashley + Adam | Clarksville Wedding Photographer

One word could describe this wedding… a word that means FUN, but sounds cooler than that and at the same time meaning elegant and entertaining? :) Help me out wordsmiths. In every detail and aspect of their day, you could tell that Ashley and Adam catered to their friends and family. They were given the perfect weather and a flawless and seemingly stress-free day… by the end of the night, my mouth was hurting from smiling so much and laughing at all the crazy dancers. Thank you two for making my job so fun and easy. :) Hitting the highlights below:

Inspired by my AKC girls, america’s next top model. :)

Immediately I noticed we had a blonde vs brunette theme going on. :)

A pretty successful and frequently requested JUMP shot. :) troopers…

I always love to see the parents having a blast, too. :) Much deserved.

Pretty sure almost every member of the wedding party performed at the reception.

Brother of the bride, and of course, per usual, my ‘wedding dancer’ cousin. :)

The photo booth was a HUGE hit. I even squeezed in on a few shots.

Congrats to Mr. and Mrs. Jackson… your wedding is an unforgettable one! View more of their wedding photos and slideshow here. Thank you to my second shooter Margo Keene for helping out with all the great shots, too! I’m going to also start including a list of all the hard-workers putting these weddings together… hopefully helpful for future brides and planners, too!

Ashley | Clarksville Bridal Portraits

Ashley had made the long trek home from Knoxville for her bridal session and it just POURED all weekend. We decided to go ahead and do a few shots in her parent’s and grand parents’ homes and I couldn’t have been happier with the settings. Despite the weather, it always seems to work out… and we created something totally different in the process. She was simply stunning.

Next post: the wedding… but until then, check out the rest of Ashley’s bridal session here.

Lifestyle Sessions | Newborn Photography

I absolutely love photographing newborns… especially when I have the chance to capture them and their proud parents in their own environment. You might hear this called a ‘lifestyle’ session… it’s uniqueness is photographing your LIFE as it is, usually in your home or a place special to you, instead of more posed and in a studio environment. The natural shots… of a mother rocking her baby and a proud daddy carefully changing a diaper… the siblings bouncing on their beds while the new baby gets to eat… crying and fussing and sometimes a blow-out or two. haha. This is life, right? :) Catching those moments is what I’m all about.

Here are a few recent lifestyle sessions, shot on location in their home… starting with little Stella:

One of my favorite parts is photographing the nursery and all the sweet details. How clever is this little display above her changing table? Stella’s mom said she used a scrapbooking punch and different papers and just placed them in this shadowbox. Love it.

Little baby Britton… these first two might be some of my favorite ever. An adoring daddy and in a split second, mom looks over with a watchful and loving glance. I didn’t pose them. I just watched through my lens.

Miss Hannah… AND family. I loved photographing Hannah’s siblings, Lauren and David, before she was born. They were SO excited to have me return to see the new baby and more importantly their huge playroom, costumes and a new race car bed. :) You never know what to expect when you walk into someone’s home, especially with a new little one and even more so with a two and four year old running around, too! It was such a blast.

Many more to come, but you can always view my most recently added work on my portfolio site: byshea.zenfolio.com.

inspired… STILL!

What a blessing these past few weeks have been… inspiration (and conviction) hitting me in the face from everywhere! It’s funny how much more you can see and be receptive to when you’re not glued to a computer til 2 am. :) Mike Larson spoke at the Nashville PUG yesterday. He is truly an inspiration, not only as a photographer, but you can tell he LOVES LIFE and LOVES HIS WIFE. I think about what I want people to take away from meeting me, knowing me, working with me… and it’s NOT ’she’s so busy/unapproachable/unavailable’. I worry that’s what comes across, especially during busy seasons when I think that I’m being a servant by not turning anyone down or saying no to any work, TRYING to be a people pleaser. Looking back, saying no to nothing pleases no one. What is it all for? I need to be THERE for those who need me. Quality over quantity. Loving PEOPLE over world/stuff/work. DUH right? Seems simple and logical? I’m sure this is an especially common battle for small business owners and self employed folks everywhere. Balance. Priorities. We all need a mission statement, a reminder, in our face, everyday, of who we want to be… and on the day before my 28th birthday, I think this is the perfect time to start mine. :)

Mike shared this quote during his presentation. It pretty much sums up what I want to be.

“Lord, as I get older I would like to be known as available more than a hard worker, compassionate more than competent, content, not driven, generous instead of rich, gentle over being powerful, a listener more than a great communicator, loving vs quick or bright, reliable and not famous, sacrificial instead of successful, self controlled rather than being excited, thoughtful more than gifted, I want to be a foot washer, I want to finish well.” – John Maxwell

inspired: shade tree films

A quick post for a monday. I love facebook for many reasons… a welcomed distraction, sharing sessions and weddings, finding babies and brides… but mostly for discovering amazing stuff like Shade Tree Films. Found these guys on my photo friend’s wall, Alec Vanderboom, which you should check out, too.

So, for must-see-monday: this film combining a love story and the wedding day. Blows me away. :)

bridesmaid + photographer: my sister’s wedding part two

I might have mentioned before how us Halliburton girls can sense a camera close by. I tried my hardest to sneak up on the happy couple in my parents front yard, right after the ceremony. Unsuccessfully, Sara caught me, but couldn’t hold back that cheerleader inside. :) The excitement on her face, the look in both their eyes… hands down, this was my most favorite moment of the day.

My favorite shot of the day: Chad’s hands around Sara’s back, during this same time of celebration above…

I want them to have this as a giant canvas on their wall. LOVE IT.

SO on the the party! The tent was set up beside the pool… so glad we convinced mom to do the floating candles… I just love this shot that Eva and Kristen got during the reception. THANK YOU for thinking of things like this while I was running around and greeting folks! It really captures the setting.

Mom did such a great job on the flower arrangements. People were touching them all night to decide if they were real. Silk flowers were a HUGE money saver. Also highly recommended on a smaller budget: walmart’s fine selection of $2.97 bottles of wine. YES! It’s actually really good! You can can buy wine at any grocery store in Birmingham (and I THINK all of Alabama)… so one trip back home, I loaded up with 9 cases of wine in my car. Good thing there were no accidents involved… I would have surely been arrested for bootlegging! haha. I love how they used an old bathtub for cooling the drinks, too.

The dances… Joel Brown Band did a GREAT job keeping the dancing going and everyone was a huge fan of ‘Short’ the sax player. :)

We knew our precious dad couldn’t handle a sappy slow song… and he LOVES LOVES to dance… so they started with ‘Sweet Child of Mine’. It was perfect and I think he really enjoyed showing his moves instead of holding back tears the whole time. :)

Then on to the blubbering mess that was our speeches. :) OF COURSE Sara preferred us speak at the reception instead of the nice intimate and cozy and not scary rehearsal dinner! WHY NOT? SURE! Lindsey and I were about to puke the whole time leading up. I DO NOT like giving speeches… we do hair and photos… SARA is the outgoing head-cheerleader type. Not us. :) We had practiced on the way from the salon that morning and couldn’t even get through the intro… we were both in tears… SO we decided to wing it. GREAT IDEA! I’m not really even sure what I said… it was a train wreck. I’m so thankful that there is no AUDIO documentation of our toasts… but really adore this little series below. :)

Whew. Glad that was over. :) The toss: I usually don’t get to participate in such important future altering traditions as the boquet toss. Thanks to Kristen and Eva, though, we’re back on track. I think I have caught over 15 boquets in my life. I don’t think it works, but really enjoying the trying. :)

One of the most fun activities of the night was the photo booth. Kristen and Cody did an AWESOME JOB. HIGHLY suggest having one! The photos are really the perfect party favor for guests and everyone had a blast. Then it makes the perfect guest book afterwards, as photos are pasted and notes are written. Such a perfect keepsake.

I even got to do a little dancing with Will!

Like I said, Dad loves to dance and ALSO sing. He proudly (and tastefully) performed his latest song about our president at the reception. If you run into my dad, please ask him to sing it for you. You’ll only have to ask once. :)

Congrats to the happy couple. It was such a fun night and I couldn’t be happier for you :)

soaking it in | spread the love tour

I’m sifting through 12 pages of notes tonight… from an incredible workshop–a rather intense 5 hour LIFE workshop–with Justin & Mary Marantz. Simply amazing. We covered everything from business, finances, and the world to self and our personal lives… and the crucial balance of them all. We even reached a point, with not one dry eye in the place, to think about what we wanted to leave behind… to actually write out our obituaries AAAAND read them. It really puts things into perspective to reflect on what ‘was’ most important in your life, to think of how others would sum you up, just like that, after it all.

I’m so pumped to share what I learned (perhaps obituary included) and my goals for the year… getting them out there means I have to follow through, right? So off to sleep on that. A big THANK YOU goes out to Justin and Mary for today… for being so open, honest and transparent about your lives… you really touched my heart. My favorite quote from the day:

“When I stand before God at the end of my life, I would hope that I would not have a single bit of talent left and could say: I used everything you gave me.” -Erna Bombeck
